A keloid scar is a type of overgrowth scar tissue that forms around a wound after it has healed. Scar tissue forms over a wound to mend and protect it when there is a skin injury. It can grow too fast in some situations, resulting in a keloid scar.
Although keloid scars are absolutely harmless, they can be unsightly, especially if they develop on exposed parts such as the chest and face. Keloid scars that are prominent and unattractive can cause social and psychological discomfort.
The texture and quality of the skin over the scar area is permanently altered once a keloid scar forms. A keloid scar may improve over time but it will not fully disappear.
The goal of keloid scar treatment is to make the scar as invisible as possible. These are the common procedures to treat a keloid scar:
Most keloids respond well to a corticosteroid called triamcinolone, which is injected directly into the scar. The treatment is safe and causes very little discomfort. It takes time for the keloid to respond and shrink after an injection. In most cases, more than one therapy is required to achieve the best outcomes.
Steroid injection has only a minor effect on keloid discoloration, which frequently necessitates the use of other treatments such as laser therapy.
Keloid scars can be improved using appropriate laser and IPL equipment. These energy device can improve the discolouration and the texture of keloid scars, resulting in less visible scars. Typically, several sessions are required to achieve the best results.
Keloid scars can only be entirely removed through surgery. If you are already prone to keloid scar formation, surgical excision may result in an even larger scar. As a result, non-surgical treatment often prescribed first.
