Pico Laser Singapore

Pico Laser is a laser technology designed for the treatment of skin pigmentation, pores, scars, tattoos. It can also be used to treat uneven skin tone and skin texture for skin brightening and rejuvenation effect.
Pico Laser is also known as 皮秒镭射,皮秒激光。

There are various Pico second Laser in Singapore such as Discovery Pico, PicoSure, PicoWay, PicoCare and many more. At SOL Aesthetics Medical Clinic in Singapore, we use Discovery Pico Laser.

What is PICO Laser?

Pico refers to picosecond, which is 1 trillionth of a second. The older Q-switched laser uses nano-second. In other words, pico laser fires laser beam in a much shorter pulse duration (how much time a laser shot stays on the skin) in comparison to the older technology. But what difference does this make in a clinical practice?

Shorter pulse duration benefits patients in many ways. Treatment outcome can be achieved in a shorter duration because more shots can be fired in a given time. Risks of laser treatment such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and skin burn become lower because pico laser does not heat up the skin so much.

PICO Laser or Q Switched Laser?

Pico Laser and Q Switched Laser primarily operate on two familiar wavelengths – 1064nm and 532nm. At these wavelengths, both lasers can effectively target skin pigmentation under the skin. Laser energy shatters the pigmentation into smaller pieces which then get removed by our body’s immune system. Pico Laser can effectively shatter pigmentation into much smaller pieces therefore making it a more effective laser for treating skin pigmentation and tattoos.

In addition, in cases which require high intensity treatment, pico laser has lower risks of complications such as skin burn and hyper or hypopigmentation.

Let us look at some common skin conditions that can be treated with pico laser.

Skin Pigmentation

Pico laser has become the most talked about laser for treating skin pigmentation. Energy from pico laser can effectively break skin pigmentation into tiny particles which are then absorbed and removed by our immune system. Due to the short pulse duration, pico laser uses photo-acoustic effect rather than photo-thermal (high heat) that physically shatters the pigments.

This results in better clinical outcome, and less number of treatments are required to treat a skin pigmentation condition.

Pores and Scars

Pico laser is also effective for treating skin texture issues such as pores and acne scars. Advanced pico second laser such as Discovery Pico uses micro-lens array (MLA) to concentrate laser energy to produce micro injuries under the skin. These micro injuries are known as laser-induced optical breakdowns (LIOB). This then triggers the skin to heal by collagen and elastin production without causing damage to the upper skin layer, resulting in lesser downtime and complications in comparison to traditional CO2 laser. By doing so, pico laser can help improve skin texture problems such as pores, scars and uneven skin texture, resulting in a smoother and more youthful skin.

What Are The Benefits of PICO Laser?

  • Reduces skin pigmentation.
  • Improve pores and acne scars
  • Skin brightening and rejuvenation
  • Evens out skin tone and skin texture

How Do I Pick The Right PICO Laser Treatment In Singapore?

Pico second laser is a technology. With this technology, different companies produce different brands of pico lasers such as Discovery Pico, PicoSure, PicoWay and many others. The differences in the machines are usually technical details that may not be applicable in clinical settings. What matters more is the knowledge and skills of the doctor handling the machine.

These are the more important factors that are taken into account during treatment:

  • Correct diagnosis of your skin condition.
  • Your skin type.
  • Previous history of laser or energy device treatments.
  • Which treatment protocol is suitable for your skin conditions.

In other words, it is important to see a doctor to get your skin condition assessed and diagnosed appropriately before undergoing pico laser treatment. That said, more robust pico lasers such as Discovery Pico Laser does have its advantages due to its reliable technology and a high peak power which generally gives more predictable and better clinical outcome.
